Khan was raised the daughter of a Catholic. She attended the elementary school at Saint Thomas the Apostle Church located in Hyde Park. Her grandmother, she said, who had introduced her music to jazz as a young child, was responsible for her musical passion. Khan began to be a huge fan of blues and rhythm as a preteen and at 11 joined a group of girls called named the Crystalettes that included the sister Taka.
